Functional Academics

  • These are the (skills) core of instructional programs for individuals with mild or moderate mental retardation.
  • Additionally these students are exposed to curriculum content focusing on their personal hygiene, independent living skills community resources and other skills which successful adjustment. A functional curriculum is concerned with the application of skills to real life situations.
  • Community based instruction is most appropriate for individuals with mental retardation. This requires instruction in mental settings using actual items.
