Prevention

  • Screening and dietary intervention for phenylketonuria (PKU).
  • Screening and thyroid hormone replacement therapy for congenital hypothyroidism condition.
  • Rh immunoglobulin to prevent Rh disease and jaundice.
  • Hib vaccine to prevent mental retardation due to Hib meningitis.
  • Prevention of mental retardation due to measles by vaccination.
  • Removal of lead from gasoline and paints.
  • Prevention of head trauma by following safety measures (road).

Rowitz et al(1986) proposed three levels of prevention



Care during Pregnancy:

Regular antenatal care- Monthly once in first 7 months. Once in fortnight in 7 and 8th month. Once in a week in 9th month.

  • I trimester: Diabetes, pregnancy confirmation folic acid is given to avoid Neural tube defects.
  • II trimester- Hb level is assessed
  • III trimester- Blood pressure, Hypertension, Blood sugar should be monitered
