Other Associated Problems

  • Hearing problems (60-80%)
  • Congenital heart disease (40-45%)
  • Intestinal abnormalities (i.e., blockages of food pipe, small bowel and anus may require surgery to correct the problem).
  • Eye problems
  • Hypothyroidism (15-20%) – a disorder that can compromise the central nervous system, it affects children with Down Syndrome at a higher rate than their peers.
  • Skeletal problems: dislocation of the hips and knees and misalignment of first two vertebrae caused by loose ligaments in the neck.
