Intelligence tests

The most common suitable preschool tests known by Schakel (1986) as “the big 4” are

1. WPPSI-R – Wechsler preschool and Primary scale of intelligence:
• It is composed of several subtests
• Suitable for 3-7 year old children.
• Sub tests include object assembly, information, geometric design, comprehension, block design, arithmetic, mazes, vocabulary, picture completion, similarities, animal pegs and sentences.
2. SB: FE – Stanford–Binet : Fourth Edition:
• It is suitable to 2 years – adulthood.
• Standardized and norm referenced test.
• It measures overall mental skill and provide a profile of mental functioning in 4 areas –
• verbal reasoning – vocabulary comprehension, verbal relations, absurdities
• abstract / visual reasoning – pattern analysis/block design, form copying, matrices, paper folding and cutting.
• quantitative reasoning – quantitative number series, equation building
• short term memory – sentence memory, bead memory, digit memory, object memory
3. K-ABC – Kaufman – Assessment Battery for children :
• Suitable for children in the age group of 2.5 – 12.5 years.
• It is a norm referenced test.
• The child needs to be able to imitate the assessor and to respond to pictures and cards with adults in a testing situation.
4. MSCA- McCarthy Scales of Children’s Abilities:
• It is a norm referenced test.
• It measures general aptitude ability of young children and their strengths and weaknesses.
• Areas covered – verbal, perceptual, quantitative, memory and general cognitive abilities.
• Suitable for children 2.5-8.5 years.
