Lesson 9 : Decision Making

Types of Decision Pattren

According to Paolucci et al. (1977), the interrelatedness of decisions can be discussed as

  1. Chain pattern decisions: These are characterized by a straight line, each decision being dependent on the preceding choice. The chain can stop and recommence at any point. An example of chain pattern decisions in a child development center might be:

    • Decision 1: The enterprenuer decides to organize a child-care center.
    • Decision 2: The enterprenuer decides in the first year to enroll only children below 2 years and provide half day programme
    • Decision 3: She decides to include full day programme with food services along with the care.
    • Decision 4: The following year they decide to add a new group for extended day care who need a place to go after their regular school and provide recreational activities. Each decision is based on experience gained in the preceding decision.

  2. Central Satellite type of Decision: In this pattern of decisions a central decision is followed by several satellite decisions that are dependent on the central decision. All satellite decisions are related to the central decisions.
  3. Example: The enterprenuer decides to start a summer camp - central decision. For starting summer camp numerous satellite decisions follow like:

    • Advertisement and admissions
    • Planning technical programme
    • Procurement of required material
    • Arranging the resource persons
    • Monitoring of the programme

Like these the enterprenuer should have various central decisions to run the programmes effectively. The satellite decisions for each central decisions is related very minimally or negligibly to other central decisions.
