  • Flowers zygomorphic, stamens definite, corolla papilionaceaous, petals imbricate, the uppermost (standard, the outer most) and the 4 others in 2 opposite pairs, stamens usually combined.
  • Climbing or prostrate, rarely erect, herbs or shrubs, rarely trees, leaves pinnately trifoliate, rarely one or 5-7 foliate, stamens monadelphous or diadelphous, pod dehiscent not jointed, leaves not gland, dotted, leaflets stipulate.
  • Style bearded below the stigma, stamens diadelphous, stigma oblique, keel not spiral.
