Lesson 16 : Measurements of Personality

Personality inventories

Contain specific structured questions which require very specific answers. These are used to study personality of normal people and to identify personality problems. These are easy to administer, have relatively good reliability and can identify major traits. The disadvantage is that they are not effective in predicting behavior in specific situations.

  1. Minnesota multiphasic personality inventory (MMPI) – 10 subscales

    Example items are -

    1. I like to set my goals high True / False.
    2. I rarely work harder than I have to True / False.
    3. I prefer having many friends True / False.

  2. California psychological Inventory (CPI)
Measures 18 traits to differentiate normal individuals from those with personality problems

  3. 16 PF – 16 personality factors Questionnaire. It measures the degree to which people have the 16 personality traits.
