Lesson 40:National Rural Employment Guarantee Programme

Manner of execution

1. Registration through submission of application on plain paper to Gram panchayat.
2. Issue of job card with photograph by Gram panchayat.
3. A job card is a document that gives an applicant legal entitlement for employment valid for 5 years.
4. Intimation of work within 15 days by means of letter and public notice by Gram panchayat office.
5. Work should be provided within 5 km of applicant’s residence. If beyond 5 km, 10% additional wage towards transport and living expenses is to be paid.
6. Facilities at work site
   1. Safe drinking water,
   2. Shelter for children
   3. First aid box
   4. A care taker for child care if there are more than five children. She will be paid like other workers.
   • Payment of wages within a fortnight of the work done.
   • Free medical treatment if injured at work place.
   • Payment of unemployment allowance in case of non-availability of wage work within 15 days of demand of the work.
