Animation– meaning and features

  • An early way of animation was the flip-book which can be tinkered by an individual where one draw a series of pictures that vary gradually from one picture to the next. Then make a book out of these pages, so that when the pages are turned rapidly, the pictures appear to animate by simulating motion or some other change.
  • Animation deals with the generation, sequencing and display of a set of images to create an effect of visual motion. Visual effects such as wipes ,fades, zooms and dissolves are available in most authoring packages. These are a simple form of animation.
  • Animation makes static presentations come alive. It is visual change over time and can add great power to our multimedia projects.
  • Carefully planned, well-executed video clips can make a dramatic difference in a multimedia project.
  • Animation is created from drawn pictures and video is created using real time visuals. Television video build 30 entire frames every second. Movies are typically shot at a shutter rate of 24 frames per second.

Why use Animation?
Animation can help organize thoughts and illustrate processes. Animation is useful for illustrating concepts which involve movement. Eg: Teaching swimming –the proper way to swing hands for swimming can be more effectively illustrated with an animation. Flow of blood in arteries and veins can be illustrated with the help of animation.

There are mainly two types of animation used in multimedia, namely 2D and 3D animation. Morphing and Warping are two commonly used special effects.
