PRINT JOURNALISM 4(1+3)

Introduction

Reporting from rural areas and about rural people is far and between that too when some politicians goes for inauguration, foundation stone laying ceremonies or for an aerial view of the flood affected areas. A genuine and powerful rural press is yet to emerge in India.

Some people tend to equate rural press with what could be best described as farm journals/ magazines and small newspapers. Such a view is erroneous. It is true there are about 300 farm periodicals published in India. They provide detailed and specific information about agriculture and other related activities. However, being specialized publication, their circulation is usually small and is mostly confined to the concerned officials, professionals and well-to-do farmers. As such their impact is limited as far as the majority of people living in rural areas are concerned.
