Nature of Leadership

Leadership involves following characteristics:

  1. A person is a leader, only when he is accepted by people and people are influenced by him. So, a leader must receive habitual obedience from his team of followers because there can be no leadership without followers.
  2. Leadership is a working relationship between the leader and his followers that means that the leader serves as an active participant in activities of the group.
  3. The main aim of leadership is to attain some common goals/objectives and to accomplish this; the leader tries hard to convince the followers.
  4. Leadership brings out desirable actions from the people voluntarily, without forcing them. Leadership does not involve bossism but a leader serves himself as an ideal before his followers, by his personal behaviour and efforts.
  5. Leadership is an interpersonal process of influencing behaviour between the leader and his followers. A leader interacts and influences upon the attitudes, behaviour and action of his followers and followers in turn influence the attitudes and behaviour of the leader by interaction.
  6. Leadership is a power-relationship as a leader is the central power structure due to his experience, knowledge and unique personal characteristics and thereby exercises power over his followers.
  7. Leadership is a continuous and dynamic process of influencing people, though it is complex and multidimensional.

Determinants of effective leadership includes ten ‘A’s which are listed as follows –

  1. Awareness of the group functions.
  2. Ability in performing the functions.
  3. Achievement of goals.
  4. Assignment of functions to members.
  5. Appraisal of effects of functions.
  6. Accomplishment of different purposes under different environments.
  7. Attaining positive values are leaders.
  8. Attaching a high code of conduct, ethical values and high morale in the group.
  9. Arrangement of communication structure.
  10. Acceptance of failure.
