Lesson 14 : Leadership

Democratic Leadership

A democratic leader consults his subordinates and accepts their participation in all the decisions taken by him. The leader works according to the desires and interests of the group and follows the opinion of the majority of people. He allows his subordinates to express their thoughts and opinions freely, listens to their suggestions and also keeps them well informed about the matters relating to them.
This leadership helps to:

  1. Improve the morale and provide job satisfaction to followers.
  2. Build the decision making skill of subordinates.
  3. Develop the potentials and capabilities of the leader through the efforts done by his team.
  4. Develop positive attitude and lowers the reluctance to change.
  5. Improve the quality of decisions taken by the leader, as he involves his followers also in decision making.

Some of the disadvantages of democratic leadership are –

  1. Time consuming
  2. Delay in decision making
  3. As time pass by, the followers expect the leader to consult them on every issue and feel frustrated if they are not involved.
  4. Leader needs to have good communication and convincing skills.
