Lesson 32 :Techniques of Participatory Rural Appraisal
Resource Map
Purpose To learn the villagers' perception of what natural resources are found in the community and how they are used.
It is one of the commonly used PRA methods, next to social map. The village resource map is a tool that helps to learn about a community and its resource base like fields and lands uses, water location, soil types and hills. The primary concern is not to develop an accurate map but to get useful information about local perceptions of resources. The map is not drawn by experts, but by local people as they have in depth knowledge of the surroundings where they are living. The participants should develop the content of the map according to what is important to them.
