Common Flooring And Their Construction

Mud Flooring

This type of flooring is mostly confined to villages and low cost dwellings of poor people. They are cheap, hard, impervious up to some extent, easy to construct and maintain. The advantage of mud flooring is that it is warm in winter and cool in summer.

Method of Construction

  • Filling up sand or earth up to the plinth level and is rammed by adding water to consolidate well
  • Then it is rammed by adding water to consolidate well.
  • Suitable earth in pulverized form is mixed with little water and kneaded well.
  • Chopped straw is sometimes added to this earth in order to prevent summer cracks in flooring.
  • The prepared earth is spread over the base to a thickness of 25- 50 mm and consolidated by ramming without adding any water further.
  • The finished surface is given a wash of cow dung (I part cow dung to 2 parts water) twice a week to have good surface
