Quarter turn stairs

A quarter turn stair is the one which changes its direction either to the left or to the right, the turn being affected either by introducing a quarter space landing or by providing winders. In the quarter –turn stairs the flight of stairs turns 90 0 at a landing as it rises to connect two different levels. This is also called L stair.

Quarter turn stairs are of two types:

  1. Newel quarter turn stairs
  2. Geometrical quarter turn stairs.

1. Newel quarter turn stairs

These stairs have the conspicuous newel posts at the beginning and end of each flight. At the quarter turn, there may either be quarter space landing or there may be winders. Two forms of this type are shown in figure below .

2. Geometrical quarter turn stairs

In geometrical stairs, the stringer as well as the hand rail is continuous with no newel post at the landing. Two forms are shown in figure below.
