Lesson 27 : Painting, Varnishing, Distempering And White-Washing
Painting
Paints are liquid compositions of pigments and binders which when applied to the surface in thin coats, dry to form a solid film to impart the surface a decorative finish. Paints protect the surface from weathering effects of the atmosphere. They prevent decay of wood and corrosion in metal.
Characteristics of an ideal paint
An ideal paint should
possess a good spreading power, i.e., maximum area of the surface should be covered by minimum quantity of the paint.
Be fairly cheap and economical.
Be such that it can be easily and freely applied on the surface.
Be such that it dries in reasonable time and not too rapidly.
Be such that its colour is maintained for a long time.
Form a hard and durable surface.
Not be affected by weathering actions of the atmosphere.
