Painting

Paints are liquid compositions of pigments and binders which when applied to the surface in thin coats, dry to form a solid film to impart the surface a decorative finish. Paints protect the surface from weathering effects of the atmosphere. They prevent decay of wood and corrosion in metal.

Characteristics of an ideal paint

An ideal paint should

  • possess a good spreading power, i.e., maximum area of the surface should be covered by minimum quantity of the paint.
  • Be fairly cheap and economical.
  • Be such that it can be easily and freely applied on the surface.
  • Be such that it dries in reasonable time and not too rapidly.
  • Be such that its colour is maintained for a long time.
  • Form a hard and durable surface.
  • Not be affected by weathering actions of the atmosphere.
  • Possess attractive and pleasing appearance.
  • Not show cracks when the paint dries.
  • Form a thin film of uniform nature.
