Common Cracks In Building

The commonly observed crack pattern in building can be group as , cracks in walls, cracks in RCC members, cracks in rendering and plasters, cracks in roof terrace and cracks in concrete and terrazzo floors.

Cracks in Walls: Cracks in the walls are very common in many buildings. Usually the cracks are observed at ceiling level in cross walls, at the base of a parapet wall, in the topmost story below slab level, usually horizontal cracks in cross walls of a multi-story load bearing structure, below opening sin line with window joints, in the top most storey at the corner, around stair case or balconies opening, at lintel or sill level in top storey, over RCC lintels spanning large opening.

In RCC Framed Structures: Most commonly observed cracks are cracking of panel walls, cracking of partition walls, cracks in free standing walls.

Cracks in RCC members: Can appear in exposed members, in RCC members due to corrosion of re-inforcement.

Cracks in rendering and plastering: Work can be seen on masonry background, on concrete background, cracks around door and window frames.

Cracks in concrete and terrazzo floor: Can appear due to crazing, corner cracks, crackling of floor in deep fillings.

Cracks can appear in roof terrace also.
