Cyclones, hurricanes and typhoons

These three terms describe the same disaster type. These refer to a large scale closed circulation system in the atmosphere which combines low pressure and strong winds that rotate counter clockwise in the northern hemisphere.

Cyclone: Used term in Indian Ocean and South Pacific
Hurricane:
Western Atlantic and Eastern Pacific
Typhoon:
Western Pacific
  1. Indian Ocean is one of the six major cyclone-prone regions of the world.
  2. In India cyclones occur usually between April- May and October-December.
  3. The eastern coastline is more prone to cyclones.
  4. These can be predicted several days in advance.
  5. The onset is extensive and very destructive than floods
  6. High winds cause major damage to infrastructure and housing.
  7. They are generally followed by heavy rains and floods in flat coastal areas by tidal waves.
