Role played by world bank

The World Bank was the first multilateral landing agency that adopted a policy for Resettlement and Rehabilitation (R and R). Its present policy is contained in the document ‘Involuntary Resettlement’ adopted in June, 1990. The policy broaden the treatment of resettlement issues beyond hydro power and irrigation projects to all type of investment operations. It emphasizes the need for-

  • Valuation and compensation principles for land and other assets affected by the project.
  • A time bound resettlement plan
  • Involving both resettlers and hosts in resettlement activities.
  • Providing displaced people by a project with the means to improve or at least restore their former living standards.
