Types of Door Handles

All these categories of handles come in varied styles from classical styles to funky or trendy designs and even in the shape of cartoon characters.p

Knobs It is other types of handles, but they stand apart in their shapes and uses. Knobs too are available in all shapes, sizes and materials and can be those with or without locks.

o

Types of Knobs

The main difference between the handle and the knob is thatknob requires the use of a fist or pincer grip to operated, while a handle gives a firm clasping to the entire hand, making leverage easier.
Knobs are unadvisable in situation where the doors are in constant use, made of heavy materials or the users could be incapacitated (children and elderly).

Locks These are used mainly security reason and sometimes to maintain the privacy of private places and moments. There is the simple turnkey lock, which could be operational from only one side or both sides of the door. These types of locking system have lever mechanisms which may be in combinations of threes and fours.

o

Types of Mortise and Cylindrical Locks

There is also the night latch- this locking system allows for the locking out of entry on the outside of the door when desired, for which a separate device needs to be activated. If not, the locks remain operational at both sides of the door.
All locks today are available in a computerized cut or mould to its parts, thereby making it unique and unduplicable

Hinges
No door can function without a Hinge which is that part which allows the shutter to move away from the opening, which forms the entrance to any place. The basic hinge comes in dikfferent lengths, and can even be run along the entire length of the shutter if required.

Different types of Hinges
Back flap hinge
These hinges are used where the shutters are thin. These are fixed to the back side of the shutter and the frame, and hence the name.

i

Butt hinge These types of hinges are commonly used for fixing doors and window shutters to the frame. The flanges of hinge are made of cast iron, malleable iron or steel, with counter sunk holes. One flange of hinge is screwed to the edge of the shutter while the other is screwed to the rebate of the frame.

h

Counter-flap hinge This hinge is formed in three parts and has two center. Hence the two leaves can be folded back to back.

q

Garnet hinge This type of hinge, also known as T-shutter, has a long arm which is screwed to the shutter and a short arm or plate which is screwed to the door frame. The hinge is used for ledged and battened doors, ledged and braced doors etc.

o

Nar-midi hinge This used for heavy doors. The flange or strap of the hinge is fixed to the shutter while the pin on which the strap rotates is fixed to the frame.

q

Parliamentary hinge These hinges permit the door shutters, when open, to rest parallel to the wall. Hence these hinges are used when the opening is narrow and when it is required to keep the opening free from obstruction due to door shutters.

o

Pin hinge This is also used for heavy door-shutters. The centre pin of the range can be removed and the two leaves or straps of the hinge can be fixed separately to the frame and the shutter.

q

Rising butt hinge Such a hinge is provided with helical nickel joints, due to which the shutter is raised by 10 mm on being opened. The door is closed automatically. Such hinges are used for doors of rooms having carpets etc. they are used in place of ordinary butt hinges.

q

Strap hinge It is a substitute of garnet or T-hinge. It is also used for ledged and braced doors, and for heavy doors such as for garages; stables, gates etc.

r

Spring hinge Single acting or double acting spring hinges are used for swinging doors. Single acting hinge is used when the door shutter opens only in one direction, while the double acting hinge is used when the shutter swings in both the directions. The door closes automatically due to spring action.

Bolts: The following are various types of bolts used for doors and windows:

  1. Aldrop It is fixed on external doors where pad locks are to be used.
  2. Barrel bolt It is used for fixing back faces of doors. The socket is fixed to the door frame while the plate is screwed to the inside of the Shutter.
  3. Espagnolette bolt This is used for securing high doors and casement windows, the top of which cannot be easily reached.
  4. Flush bolt This bolt is used when it is desired to keep the bolt flush with the face of the door.
  5. Hasp and staple bolt This is also used for external doors where pad lock is to be used. The staple is fixed to the door frame, while the hasp fixed to the shutter.
  6. Latch This is made of malleable iron or bronze. It consists of lever pivoted at one end, which can be actuated by a trigger passing through the shutter; the lever is secured in a hasp and staple. It is fixed to the inside face of the door.
  7. Hook and eye This is used for keeping the window shutter in position when the window is open. The hook is fixed to the sill of the frame while the eye is fixed to the bottom rail of the shutter.

Fittings for sliding/folding doors Sliding/folding doors often use a pivot hinge, which is attached to the top and bottom corner of the door shutter. These doors require a rail or groove arrangement in either the ceiling or both ceiling and floor.

Door Sliding Fittings

Other Miscellaneous Fittings

Knockers Knockers give a door its character. They are available in all shapes, sizes, materials and themes.
Letter Slits
These are a direct manifestation of the apartment block, which does not allow for the mailbox due to space constraints.
Nameplates
They add the signature to main doors and can be designed in a myriad ways.
Doorstop and Door Springs
They serve the opposite functions. Doorstops help to keep the door open and are available as rubber pegs attached to the base of the door or magnetic holds attached to hold the door shutter against the wall, Door Springs consist of a mechanism which helps to close the door after a person has passed through. This is especially useful in frequently used public places like toilet facilities for the infirm.
Sensory Device
Several public places are also operated by a sensory device, which makes the door open when a person is within passing through distance from it. Such doors are normally made of glass.

Other Security Related Fittings These fittings include Peep Chains, Peepholes, Grills or even Glass Panels. While Peep Chains allow the door to be ajar, but secure from forced entry of an intruder. Peep holes and Grill and Glass Panels allow the person inside to get a view of the visitor before allowing entry.
Today High Tech Gadgets like close circuit cameras, intercom devices and screen displays allow the homeowner to fully verify the identity and status of the visitor before granting entry.
