Line provides a visual path for the eye to follow, thus creating motion in the design. This line is the framework which holds the entire arrangement together. The designer creates line by using linear-materials, such as stems, branches, or line flowers. Line flowers are long, slender spikes of blossoms with florets blooming along the stem. It may also be developed by the placement of round flowers in sequence, creating a feeling of direction.
Line in a design sets an emotional tone. It can give the viewer feelings of swift motion, repose, reverence, and gentleness. Vertical lines imply strength, dignity or feelings of formality, while a curved line adds gentleness. The curved line adds a feminine dimension. Horizontal lines suggest informality and make people feel restful. For this reason, the horizontal line is often used for table arrangements.
To maintain movement, the lines of a design must never be broken. If they are, restless feeling results. Lines should also appear to originate from one point. Line movement in the most common designs can be seen in Fig:4.1.
