Lesson 03: Material Used For Furniture Construction

Glass

Glass apart from its use for windows and large exterior doors is halso used inside the home in partitions and sliding doors. Its sparkle livens up any interior.
It has been used for furniture making as well, but such items tend to be collector’s pieces and are not commonly seen. Glass tops are often found on top of writing tables and dining tables. Another common use is the making of light fittings and chandeliers.

Glass can be made into very fine threads. This is called jfiberglass. Fiberglass can be woven into cloth and nets which are very hard wearing and non-flammable. Such material is not yet easily available in our country. It can be used for curtains. The glass fibres can also be mixed with plastics to make a very strong, light material which is now commonly being used for the manufacture of furniture. It is commonly seen as brightly coloured moulded chairs especially in public places like airports, restaurant and auditoria.
