Lesson 13:Landscape Resources: Soil

Soil water

  • The amount and type of soil moisture is important for plant growth.
  • Out of three types of groundwater, namely hygroscopic water, gravitational water and capillary water, only the capillary water is available for plant growth.
  • The amount of capillary water depends on the structure, texture, and organic matter content of the soil.
  • Fine textured soils which are granular in nature and contain organic matter can retain the maximum amount of capillary water.
  • In light soils the water holding capacity can be improved by the addition of organic matter.
