Lesson 21 : Trends In Communication And Barrier

Introduction

The communication starts from the nonverbal state between the parent and child. The child makes its needs known through fussing or crying. Then comes the verbal communication first with family and then with community. Children’s growth toward autonomy and adult status can be facilitated by parent- child interaction. By example more than by discussion, parents provide initial models of adult behavior. Adults who can satisfactorily resolve difficulties, who can manage their aggressive feelings, and who are interested in life tend to promote their own growth as well as that of their children. Adults who physically or verbally attack children not only can damage a child’s self concept but can teach the child that violence is an acceptable part of adult behavior. The modern gadgets like television, computers, and mobile have their impact on communication.

Children can be guided in their development of human resources through communication. Mothers, for example, who emphasize how to solve problems rather than offering specific solutions, promote the development of problem solving abilities in their children. Parents who recognize the developing unique capabilities of their children can promote positive self concepts in children through verbal reinforcement.
