Prior to painting the interior walls, ceiling, woodwork, doors, or windows, it is necessary to estimate the amount of paint required for purchase. The amount of paint needed for each room will depend on the size of the area to be painted. Separate estimation is necessary for each surface to paint with different colour, type or technique. Most interior paints provide 350 to 400 square feet of coverage per gallon. It is easy to follow this formula as a guide:
Step 1: To find the total square footage, measure the entire room. ___ wall width x ___ wall height (floor to ceiling) x ___number of walls = ___ total square feet
Step 2: If the doors and windows will be a separate color, calculate this area and subtract from the total square footage. ____ # of doors x 21 square feet (standard door size) = _______ total square feet ____ # of windows x 15 square feet (standard window size)= _____ total square feet
Step 3: Total square footage divided by square feet of coverage per gallon = Number of gallons per coat Repainting Walls:
- Before starting to repaint walls, make sure that the surface is clean of dust, grease and other foreign matter.
- Decide on superior quality and adequate quantity of paint and mix contents of paint properly to get consistency in paint work
Remove light switch and outlet plates, light fixtures (or cover them well) and drapes, curtains, lamps, furniture
- Patch nail holes, dents, and cracks with spackling and let the spackling dry before painting
- Sand & Scrape to remove loose paint and sand to even any edges
- Apply A Primer if you selected a dark paint color and if your walls are new or show lots of damage
