Lesson 16 : Problem Windows And Selection Of Treatments

Customized Windows And Design Solutions

A window looks best when hung with a sheer fabric. But architectural deficiencies of windows that are poorly spaced or poorly shaped can be a problem. These deficiencies can be camouflaged with curtains and draperies.

  • Two windows separated by a narrow wall section might be treated as one with a unifying cornice or valance and draw draperies.
  • Short windows may have to be given the effects of added height by placing fixtures above the actual window openings
  • Narrow windows will seem width if the draperies extend beyond the sides , various types of cornices and valances may be used to add height or width, the amount of dimension added depending on the manner in which these fixtures are mounted. Deep cornices and swags may be used to give tall, narrow windows more pleasing proportions. They can be made to look wider than it really is by hanging draperies with a horizontal pattern and extending the curtain rod well beyond the casing so that most of the glass is exposed.
  • Arched windows and slanting clerestory windows present problems of decoration .curved rods or flexible tapes can be used to mount curtains on curved frame. On clerestory windows, the rod can follow the slant of the frame. The curtain should be carefully measured since it will be shorter on one side than the other. With both these problems it is often more attractive to leave the unusually shaped area uncovered than to use a treatment that seems contrived or awkward.
  • Windows of different sizes in a room are also a problem. Two windows of different heights can be seem alike by hanging full length sheer curtains from the height of the larger window and using valances. A sill high table under window can further the illusion.
  • Sliding glass windows are also a problem as they do not have enough protection against the sun or sky glare. A roof overhang may solve this problem. Alternatively use heavy curtains or sheers which diffuse sun and glare and and yet let look through.
  • Off sized windows on one wall can be treated by using a dram ate folding screen in front of the window without sacrificing essential light from the windows
  • Bad window placement can also be camouflaged through the use of venation blinds and give an optical illusion of one large window, draperies can be used to cover any of them, either as side draperies for decorative use only, or as a complete wall-to – wall installation.
  • When a group of windows is contained on a narrow wall and a single window is nearby on an adjoining wall, a spotty- looking window treatment can be avoided by running the draperies around the corner from window to window. Draping an entire wall in which a group of windows is cantered is also done which lends a feeling of space and continuity.
  • A bay window overlooking a garden should be hung with plain textured curtains which can be gathered well into corners for an unobstructed view.
  • Maintenance is also a problem .windows that require minimum amount of care and still make it functional and attractive are necessary. Easy maintenance should be the primary consideration. Easy care fabrics and easy to clean windows with proper placement are essential.
