GUIDELINES ON WRITING A PRESCRIPTION

- A prescription should be
- Clear neat and legible
- Free from errors

Each ingredient should have separate line

Each line shall begin with a capital letter.

Abbreviations and chemical symbols should not be used.

If a prescription contain both solid and liquid drug solids should be written first.

Names of ingredients should be written first and vehicle last.

Latin terms and abbreviations should not be use in prescriptions. But if there is any doubt it is better to write in English.

When writing more than ordinary dose underline the quantity essential so that pharmacist will understand that the larger dose is prescribed intentionally.

Simple and clear direction must be given without any abbreviations.
