QUALITIES OF GOOD LEADER

  • Spiritually, intellectually and physically a leader should be high above his followers. The following are the three important qualities of a good leader.
    • Integrity: Honest and pure in thought, word and action.
    • Intelligence: Mental ability.
    • Physical health: Energy.
  • The local leaders must be properly selected, trained and used to make them more effective in bringing about socio-economic development. The following points should be kept in mind.
    • Extension is the primary responsibility of grass root extension agent.
    • The role expectancy of leaders must be carefully determined and adhered to.
    • The relationship between professional workers and voluntary leaders must be a cooperative and continuing one of mutual assistance and joint responsibility.
    • Local leadership is potentially a great human resource for promoting change in a democratic society.
    • Mobilising,developing and properly utilizing voluntary leadership is a highly complex process of human relations that must be carefully applied and worked at constantly.
  • The grass root level extension agent or the primary professional agent of change must assume responsibility for all professional leadership and joint responsibility with the people for the success of the programme at the local level.
  • From these three factors other derivatives may be enumerated. The following characteristics are examples of qualities to look for in a local leader.
    • Initiative to take the lead and infuse confidence in others.
    • Intellect to understand issues and identify problems.
    • Interest and energy to work unselfishly with his followers.
    • Influence over others and the ability to persuade and teach.
    • Integrity and sense of responsibility.
    • Experience in farming and modern practices.
    • Educated and literate.
    • Reliable and regular participant in development programmes.
    • Innovative and willing to try out new ideas.
    • Trusted and liked by his fellow livestock owners.
