Use of the local leader

A good extension worker/veterinarian always tries to get the support of the local leaders/farmers in his extension work.
-
In any extension organization there will be a small number of professional extension agents. It is not possible for the extension agent to contact each and every farmer in his area of operation.
-
This can be solved by appointing or engaging local leaders in their extension activities.
The local leaders serve the following purposes:
-
Can assume responsibility for certain activities in the absence of extension agent.
-
Help to organize local extension agents.
-
Assist directly in the spread of new ideas and practices by demonstrating them in their fields.
-
Serve as point of contact between the agent and the farmers.
-
Working with local leader also builds closer ties with local farmers, and encourages farmers’ confidence in the extension service.
