Suggestions to make good transparencies

SUGGESTIONS TO MAKE GOOD TRANSPARENCIES

Writing and drawing

  • Prepare a rough design.
  • Drawing, lettering should be restricted to a rectangular message area of about 6” x 9”.
  • Visual ideas such as charts, graphs, pictures, maps etc. in addition to key points can be drawn and written.
  • Have one basic idea in each transparency.
  • Use simple lettering. Have letter size of ¼” height with sufficient spacing.
  • Use underlines to draw attention.
  • Avoid vertical composition.
  • Minimum verbiage.
  • The three 8 principle viz., 8 lines per transparency, 8 words per line and not less than 8 mm letter height shall be followed in writing / typing the transparency
  •  Sufficient line space(1 ½ letter height between lines) should be given.
  • Use ruled paper backing while writing sentences.
  • Use 2 to 3 colours.
  • Transparencies should be serially mounted and numbered.

Mounting transparencies

  • Preferably use ready made OHP mount otherwise hand made mount.
  • Eliminate light leaks on the edge of a transparency.
  • Permit easier handling.
  • Write notes or question on the edge of the mount.
  • Easier to store or mount.

Types of Transparencies

  • Hand written or drawn transparency
    • It is a transparency prepared by using acetate sheet of required size to draw or write whatever is required to be projected.
  • Typed transparency
    • Here the required material is typed on the transparent sheet.
  • Picture transfer transparency
    • This is a transparency prepared by using an acetate sheet on which pictures or written message is transferred through photocopy. The thickness of the transparency sheet should be 100 microns in this case.
  • Suspense transparency
    • Strip transparency
      • In this type of transparency the written words are covered with strips of paper so as to project one point at a time. The advantage is that it enables the teacher to build some suspense as also to focus the audience attention to one point at a time.
    • Pull transparency
      • It is a slight variation of strip transparency in that instead of being fixed with strip of paper to cover a point, they are covered with loose strips of paper which could be pulled one at a time in the course of presentation.
    • Single flap double projection transparency
      • It is a transparency on which matter relating to two ideas is organized to be presented in such a way that only one idea can be exposed at a time while the matter relating to the other can be covered with the help of a flap of paper.
  • Window transparencies
    • It is that type of transparency that enables the speaker to give a magic touch to the story under presentation by opening out and moving the parts of the visual in a manner that suggests the matter of presentation in an interesting and attractive way.
  • Overlay transparency
    • It consists of a number of transparencies each of which projects a specific part of the whole theme of the matter enabling the speaker to build a complete story by projecting successive transparencies one at a time. When all of them are in position, the complete picture is before the audience.
