Flannel Board

FLANNEL BOARD

  • A flannel board is a flannel-covered on flat surface. Flannel is stretched and then glued to a piece of plywood (or) heavy cardboard. A flannel graph is any graphic material used on a flannel board. Khadi cloth may also be used for the purpose.

Aim

  • To construct and develop an idea in a step-by-step dramatic and impressive manner, to compose the material to suit the special needs of the group and to build up and create suspense among the audience.

Principle

  • This works on the principle that one piece of rough textured cloth will adhere (or) stick to another rough material. These coarse backed objects, flannel graphs, therefore stick to the flannel cloth and stay there until removed.

Materials required

  • Flannel, glue, plywood, soft wood, heavy cardboard, rough textured cloth, sand paper, pictures, cut-outs, graphs, drawings and text materials.

Procedure

  • Select a suitable size flannel board (30’x 40’).
  • Prepare story or message in drawings, photographs, illustrations etc.
  • Cut the pictures / messages and paste pieces of sand paper on their backs.
  • Use good colour combination.
  • Place the flannel groups and give a gentle downward pressure and it will stick.
  • Rehearse the presentation until you are certain that you can deliver the message in an impressive manner.
  • Limit the number of visuals from 10-15 in a single presentation.
  • Serially number the flannel strips, which will help to rearrange if mixed during transit.

Advantages

  • Facilitate presentation of the talk.
  • Help in clarifying concepts.
  • Help in showing the cumulative process.

Limitations

  • Suitable only for a small group.
  • Require some preparation and practice.
