PASSING OF PROBANG IN CATTLE

  • Stomach tubing is a quick and relatively painless method to deliver large quantities of liquid medication of fluids.
  • The length of the oesophagus is measured by keeping the probang from the mouth to the 9th rib.
  • The animals tongue is grasped gently and held firmly before introduction of the probang.
  • By a careful manner the probang is advanced to the oesophagus
  • The movement or passage of probang in the oesophagus is visible or palpable from out side at the cervical part of oesophagus.
  • The rumen cud is expelled through the probang if it enters into the rumen.
  • The animal's head is lowered to recover the ruminal fluid and to avoid aspiration.
  • Simultaneous compression of rumen yields large quantity of rumen liquor.
  • Passing of stomach tube is most useful in cattle in cases of ruminal free gas bloat as well as ruminal acidosis.
