Clinical Significance
-
High values of total cholesterol may be found in diabetes mellitus, hypothyroidism, obstructive jaundice, nephrotic syndrome, biliary cirrhosis, atheroslerosis, etc.
-
Low values of total cholesterol may be found in hyperthyroidism, malnutrition, gaucher’s disease and acute hepatitis.
-
Decreased level of HDL cholesterol lead to increased chance of coronary heart disease (CHD) while increased levels reduce these chances.
-
Lower values of HDL cholesterol and increased ratio of total cholesterol to HDL cholesterol are taken as risk factor for CHD.
