STREPTOCOCCOSIS

Streptococcal mastitis

  • It is an obligate parasite of the bovine mammary glands
  • It is a specific contagious disease of cattle transmitted from cow to cow by means of milker’s hands or contaminated milking equipment
  • Bacteria enters through teat canal, colonise within the ducts, ductules and acini.
  • Streptococci do not invade deep into interstituim of the gland
  • Epitheluim is affected with infiltration of neutrophils and later by macrophages, prolicerative fibroblastic connective and nodules of lymphocytes
  • Cystic dilatation of ducts with papillary projection
  • Acute inflammatory reaction is later followed by fibrosis of gland

Urogenital infections caused by S. canis in dogs and S. zooepidermicus in horses

  • Vaginitis
  • Cervicitis
  • Endometritis
  • Placentitis
  • Abortion
  • Urethritis
  • Pyelonephritis

Cervical lymphadenitis of pigs

  • Swine strangles, jowl abscess. Characterized by absceses

Streptococcal meningitis and Arthritis in pigs

  • Young pigs affected by S. suis
  • Organism enters through oral and respiratory route
  • Pharyngitis, cervical lymphangitis
  • Fibrinopurulent meningitis and polyarthritis

Neonatal streptococcal infection

  • Suppurative polyarthritis (joint – ill)
  • Meningitis
  • Navel ill
  • Localization in valvular endocardium, kidneys, choroid of eye
