Contagious pleuropneumonia of swine

CONTAGIOUS PLEUROPNEUMONIA OF SWINE

  • Caused by Haemophilus pleuropneumoniae. Endotoxins produce lesions
  • Spreads through respiratory route by infected animals
  • Young animals up to 6 months of age are susceptible
  • Death with one day or two
  • Mortality 50%
  • Clinical signs include fever, respiratory distress, nasal discharge mixed with blood
  • Characteristic lesions are fibrinopurulent pneumonia, fibrinous pleuritis, sequestration of lungs, meningitis and arthritis
  • Microscopically, alveolar and interlobular oedema, dilation of lymphatics, congestion, haemorrhage and intravascular fibrinous thrombus
