Etiology

  • Ehrlichia equi

Incidence

  • Occurs in USA

Transmission

  • Through blood containing the organism, ticks

Clinical signs

  • Fever
  • Anorexia
  • Oedema of legs
  • Ataxia
  • Leucopenia
  • Thrombocytopenia
  • Increased plasma icteric index
  • Lymphopenia

Lesions

  • Petechiae, eccyhymoses, oedema in muscles, fascia and subcutis
  • Jaundice
  • Orchitis

Diagnosis

  • Demonstration of the organism in neutrophils and eosinophils
  • Identification of the organism in tissue sections, serological antibodies identified by indirect IFT, Electron microscopy
