Azoturia/ Paralytic myoglobinuria / Monday morning sickness

AZOTURIA

Synonym:  Paralytic myoglobinuria / Monday morning sickness

  • Occurs in working horses following a few days of rest while on full rations.
  • Clinical signs include trembling, profuse sweating, recumbency
  • Serum activities of creatinine kinase, alkaline phosphatase and aspartate amino transferase are increased.
  • Grossly, muscles have foci of discolorations and haemorrhages

- Kidney Swollen and congested.

- Urinary bladder contains brown urine (myoglobinuria)

  • Microscopically, Myofiber degeneration and necrosis is characterised by swollen, eosinophilic, hyaline, fragmented myofibers with loss of striations, macrophages infiltrate areas of necrosis.
  • Renal tubular necrosis with myoglobin casts are seen.
