Post parturient haemoglobinuria

POST PARTURIENT HEMOGLOBINURIA

  • It is an acute hemolytic anemia of dairy cows.
  • Usually seen in multiparous cows which have given birth a few weeks previously.
  • Hemoglobinuria results from severe hemolysis of circulating erythrocytes with red cell counts less than 1 million.
  • Erythrocytes may contain Heinz bodies.
  • Clinical sings are icterus, oedema, laboured breathing
  • Lesions are centrilobular necrosis and haemoglobinuric nephropathy.
  • Pathogenesis is related to hypophosphataemia.
