CLASSIFICATION OF DRUGS USED IN FOOD ANIMALS

Infectious diseases

  • Antibiotics
  • Anti-inflammatory drugs
  • Supportive therapy
  • Milk let-down and parturition drugs
  • Sedative/pain reducers
  • Digestive stimulants
  • Dips and sanitizing agents.

Non-infectious disease

  • vitamins
  • minerals
  • calcium/magnesium/propylene glycol etc. for milk fever,
    tetany, ketosis;
  • energy additives
  • digestive stimulants.

Reproductive management

  • induce calving (certain steroids and others)
  • produce uterine contractions to evacuate the uterus (oxytocin, ergonovine)
  • control reproductive infections - (antibiotics and others)
  • induce estrus and heat synchronization (prostaglandins, estrogens & progesterone)
  • treat various types of ovarian cysts (GnRH, HCG and prostaglandins)
    maintain pregnancy (progesterone)
  • produce super ovulation in embryo transfer programs (FSH); h) anesthesia/tranquilizers.

Production related drugs

  • BST, (bovine somatotropin) and PST (porcine somatotropin) (in future if FDA approves)
  • growth implants for some cattle
  • Ionophores -- rumensin etc. --heifer development

Preventive medical compounds

  • Sanitizers in animal environment.
