Zoonoses

ZOONOSES

  • The word 'zoonoses' (zoonosis, singular) was coined by a German physician Rudolf Virchow in 1885
  • World Health Organization's Committee defined zoonoses as "those diseases and infections which are naturally transmitted between vertebrate animals and man". Veterinary epidemiologists and public health authorities modified the definition as those infections and infestations shared in nature by man and lower vertebrate animals because that the word 'natural transmission' was ambiguous.
