Introduction

  • Intensive follow-up is one way of outbreak investigation of a disease in a small or large population in a particular geographical area.
  • The principle of outbreak investigation is the same as the examination of affected animal in a hospital. But it is a holistic approach.
  • The total population (unaffected, infected and dead individuals) is considered rather than an individual in the population.
  • Apart from the population, etiological factors that are influencing over the occurrence of diseases are also investigated.
  • The combined investigation of clinical, epidemiological and pathological diagnosis has been carried out during disease outbreak investigation.
  • Major objectives of outbreak in vestigations are,
    • Halting the progress of the disease
    • Determining the reasons for the outbreak
    • Initiating corrective measures, and
    • Recommending procedures to reduce the risk of future outbreaks.
