Live Cockles: Cockles should be harvested carefully to avoid damage.  After harvesting they should be washed to remove any mud and other dirt.  Cockles and clams can be kept alive for several weeks when stored cool.

They are best packed in perforated high density polyethylene bags.  These give better storage results than woven polypropylene sacks. 

It is commonly believed that it cockles are alive they are of premium quality. It is found that live cockles have a noticeable loss in meat quality during storage.  When live cockles were stored at high ambient temperatures quality loss was noticeable after 2 days and after 3 days the meat quality of live cockles because unacceptable.
