1.4.4. Top ten principal producers in total capture fisheries production

The following is the list of top ten fish producers in the world through capture fisheries (both marine and inland). These top ten countries alone contributed 51.9% to the total global capture fisheries production. The most significant change in the ranking of the top ten producers was the gaining of a position by two Asian countries (i.e. Indonesia and India), which surpassed two American countries (i.e., the USA and Chile) whose total capture production decreased by 10 and 15 percent, respectively in comparison with 2006. In addition to the performance of the Asian countries mentioned above, other major Asian fishing countries (i.e. Bangladesh, Myanmar, Philippines and Vietnam) have been reporting regularly increasing capture fisheries in the last ten years despite well-known cases of local overfishing and natural disasters such as the December 2004 tsunami and cyclones, that have occurred in their area in recent years.
