4.2.1 Reservoirs of the Ganga river system

The main reservoirs on the Ganga river system are Rihand, Matatila, Nanaksagar and Sardasagar in Uttar Pradesh; Tilaiya, Maithon, Konar, Panchet and Mayurakshi in Jharkhand, Gandhisagar in Madhya Pradesh and Kangsabati in West Bengal. The reservoirs on the Ganga river system, especially Rihand and Gandhisagar harbour indigenous Indian major carps.

Fishes in the reservoirs located in the upper reaches of the rivers are three species of mahseers, namely, Tor putitora, T. mosal and T. tor; the katli, Acrossocheilus hexagonolepis; the snow trout, Schizothorax plagiostomus; medium carps, Labeo dero and L. pangusia and the goonch, Bagarius bagarius. The reservoirs located in the middle and lower reaches of the rivers harbour the Indian major carps, catla, rohu, mrigal and kalbasu; other carps viz. Labeo gonius , L. bata, L. boga, L. boggot, Puntius sarana, Chagunius chagunio, etc. Important catfishes in this region are Wallago attu, Silonia silondia, Pangasius pangasius, Rita rita, Mystus aor, M. seenghala, etc. Smaller catfishes are Clupisoma garua, Eutropiichthys vacha, Mystus cavasius, Ompok bimaculatus, etc.
