Fish and Fisheries

Most of the ponds in villages are seasonal, i.e., drying up in intense summers and getting filled-up during monsoons, if properly connected with an irrigational channel. Most of the ponds receive fish from the connecting sources and are usually represented by hardy fishes like Mystus vittatus, Clarius, heteropneustes , Channa sp., Among others, small sized Puntius sp., Labeo sp., and bottom dwelling Lepidocephalichthys and Noemacheilus sp,. are common. Only deep and age-old ponds harbour major carps through natural inputs or through stocking by village punchayats or private pisciculturists. Government agencies, like fisheries department construct fish ponds for rearing commercially important indigenous and exotic varieties.
