IFOAM started during 1970, which now has more than 750 member organisations in over 100 countries.

Took the lead in setting standards for organic agriculture.

Several countries and organisations have their own standards but largely follow IFOAM standards.

Meanwhile, the FAO and WHO jointly brought out guidelines during 1999, known as Codex Alimentarius Commission’ guidelines for production, processing, labelling and marketing of organically produced food (ACIGL-32-1999).
