Ventricular septal defect

VENTRICULAR SEPTAL DEFECT

  • Relatively common in cats. Most common congenital cardiac anomaly in horses. Heritable in miniature swine. Shunting of blood from L to R heart increases left sided pressures. Systolic murmur in right 4th ICS usually with thrill, may be absent if very large defect.
  • Pulmonary artery and veins enlarged. Depending on size of defect, may see significant circulatory derangements and acute left sided congestive heart failure. If resistance increases, then blood starts shunting right to left, called Eisenmenger’s Complex
  • Diagnosis is with radiography, ansd chocardiography. Do not breed the animals.
