Leukopenia

LEUKOPENIA

Exists when the total leukocyte count in the peripheral blood falls below the normal range. Some common causes of leukopenia are:

  • Viral diseases (panleukopenia, distemper, canine infectious hepatitis).
  • Bacterial septicemia and toxemia
  • Bacterial endotoxin
  • Acute overwhelming bacterial disease
  • Chronic bacterial disease due to bone marrow exhaustion
  • Bracken fern poisoning
  • Certain drugs such as sulfonamides
  • Excessive exposure to radiation
  • Aplastic anemia
