Pathophysiology

PATHOPHYSIOLOGY

  • Bacteria usually gain access to the prostate gland by ascending the urethra and overcoming the lower urinary tract host defense mechanisms.
  • Incomplete resolution of acute bacterial prostatitis can lead to chronic bacterial prostatitis or abscess formation;
  • Intraprostatic accumulation of prostatic secretions (e.g., in animals with cystic benign prostatic hyperplasia or squamous metaplasia)  become secondarily infected, resulting in chronic bacterial prostatitis or prostatic abscess.
