TREATMENT

  • Trimethoprim/sulfonamides or fluoroquinolones -a minimum of 4 weeks of antimicrobial administration is necessary.
  • Patients with acute bacterial prostatitis and prostatic abscess—dogs are usually systemically ill and septic; parenteral antibiotics are indicated until the dog is stable; a minimum of 8 weeks of antimicrobial administration is indicated
  • Patients with tenesmus—a stool softener such as psyllium
